What Do You Read?

On July 21, 2010, in Books, by Tim

I personally read a wide variety of books, but I’m curious what other people read. I have a few hunches about which categories in this poll are going to get the most answers, based on the demographics of who follows me on Twitter and, therefore, is likely to see this poll in the first place, but I figured it might be a fun exercise anyways.

What genres do you typically read?

  1. I pretty much read anything, recently I’ve been reading lots about the Second World War and lots of Neil Gaiman. But pretty much i’ll read anything.

Just finished ‘Ender’s Game’ for the first time. It was pretty good.
I’m not sure what I’d classify some of my most common reads though – stuff like Douglas Coupland and Kurt Vonnegut. Drama? Literature? Or mere fiction? Or, in Vonnegut’s case, you could say Sci-fi, too. Confusing.

I really enjoy sci fi fantasy. Favorite series include the Ender series by Orson Scott Card, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, and the Sabriel trilogy by Garth Nix. Also greatly enjoy Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, and books by Roger Zelazny (specifically Lord Demon and Donnerjack). I could go on for hours listing books and authors…

  4. Tim says:

No surprise about the sci fi/fantasy predominance here. Pretty much what I expected.

  5. King Kool says:

The two opposites: nonfiction and science fiction.

Also, what is “literature?” What does that signify? Erotica? Twilight? Sunspots?

  6. I guess I meant literature to be, like, “the classics.” Dickens, Swift, Mark Twain, that kind of stuff.

  7. Metcarfre says:

There’s not really a ‘modern fiction’ type option there, which is something I read a fair amount of.

  8. David says:

I’ve just started Ringworld. So far I’m liking it a lot.
