I certainly understand your sentiment on fanfiction. I’ve certainly wanted to get away from writing it, especially recently, but I always keep getting new ideas based off of other series that really don’t work as original ideas. I think it’s just going to take a little bit of brute force on my part to get a story made off of the original ideas I do have and hope that causes a cascade of ideas based off each other instead of coming based off established properties.
Maybe you can find a way to combine inspiration from a couple of different franchises into a new idea!
Yeah, that makes sense. I just have a lot of fun expanding on a world that’s only glimpsed from these limited perspectives of their particular show/game/etc. If I start writing more, though, I’m sure I’ll start building up enough of my own ideas to branch out.
Well if you feel like you really want a world to write in and still have at least partial ownership, you can always do something in the Special People universe. There’s a whole globe of other locations filled with special people whose stories could be told! :)
That’s quite the offer, and a very tempting one. I might just do that at some point. Right now, though, I’ve already paid you to use my best character ideas, so I’d need to think of new ones. :P
Just release all of them as a compilation called “Special People”, and everyone will be happy. I would love to have Hands-On et al. in a compilation on paper, or in PDF, and then you can include the one-offs. Something like ‘Hearts in Atlantis’, only far less likely to become a bad story focussing on one tale.
I think that’s the direction I’m considering. Hands-On plus various short stories, maybe targeting 75 to 100 pages in print. Could work.
